The purpose of the Society

We are here when you need us, whether it is help with financial support that our many benefits offer, or to keep in touch with you when life throws you a curve ball. We are only ever a phone call away. We want to help you and your family. We have a network of people around the country who can assist you in times of need. We offer holiday homes at reasonable rates for families to have a break. We also offer a Mutual Fund, Healthcare99 that for an extra cost can support you financially when healthcare needs arise.

Our proud history

Whilst sitting around a table one day, a group of Firefighters wanted to do something to support their colleagues and their families in times of need. Money was put into a biscuit tin to be given to those who needed support – this was the beginning of our organisation and firefighters helping firefighters. Thirty plus years on our ethos is the same, we are here to Support you and your family. Firefighters helping Firefighters and their families. Read more about our history here.

Elections: Region One and Region Three

No one stood against the Region One Representative, Darryl Johnston, and we had one nomination for Region Three, Kris Gilmour.

Hence there is no need for an election. As returning Officer, I declare Darryl Johnston to be the Region One Board/Regional Representative and welcome Kris Gilmour as the Region Three Board/Regional Representative.

I would like to thank them for giving up their time to support our organisation and our members – their new four-year term will begin 1 June 2024.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Noel Brock for the years of service he has given to our organisation.

Amanda Smith
Returning Officer

Rule Change

At our AGM held in September 2023 our members voted and passed some rule changes. One of these changes was to increase our contribution rates. These changes have now been accepted by the Registrar.

The new rule changes will come into effect from PAY ONE – 3 April 2024. If you pay via Fire Service Payroll or through a Direct Debit you will not need to do anything, we will adjust your payments. The increase is only $1.00 per week for members up to the age of 64 or $0.50 cents per week for members aged over 65.

The new annual contribution rate will be:

  • Ordinary Members to the age of 64 – annually – $312.00.
  • Senior Members 65 plus – annually – $156.00.

We don’t take increasing our contributions lightly as we are aware times are tight for many people, but like all organisations, our costs have also increased. The last contribution increase was March 2019. Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

2023/2024 Scholarships Awarded

As a member of the NZ Firefighters Welfare Society you have access to 17 different Membership Benefits. One of these is the Scholarship Benefit, which pays a $500 financial contribution (per winner) towards members children’s education costs. Read more here.
